P.E.T. began over 45 years ago as the first national parent-training program to teach parents how to communicate more effectively with kids and to offer step-by-step advice for resolving family conflict so that everybody wins. This beloved classic is the most studied, highly-praised, and proven parenting program in the world. This groundbreaking book will teach you the following lessons: - How to avoid being a permissive parent - How to listen so kids will talk to you and talk so kids will listen to you - How to teach your children to own their problems and to solve them - How to use the No-Lose method to resolve conflicts Using the timeless methods of P.E.T. will have immediate results: less fighting, fewer tantrums and lies, and no need for punishment. To my Judy, and to the hundreds of children I haved counseled, who provided me the opportunity to learn about parenthood.

To Elaine, my companion, counselor, and colleague in parenthood, whose penetrating insights so frequently enriched my own thinking and contributed immeasurably to the development and growth of Parent Effectiveness Training.

To the group of dedicated P.E.T. instructors, whose faith and inspired efforts as pioneers of our program in their own communities helped shape my dream into a reality.
