Summer along Canada's Sunshine Coast is murderously hot in this moody mystery thriller by the Edgar Award-winning author of The Suspect. RCMP Sergeant Karl Alberg is attempting to escape the heat with his girlfriend Cassandra when they discover a body on the beach, fresh from a fatal plunge into the icy, all-too-appealing waves. As Alberg knows from his days as a big-city cop, heat can make people do strange things--such as the recent act of vandalism at a local petting zoo. But was there something more to this untimely death? Meanwhile, Alberg's personal life also threatens to boil over. Not only is his daughter visiting, but his ex-wife is getting married again. Weaving these provocative strands through a Pacific Northwest heatwave, acclaimed author L.R. Wright once again delivers an atmospheric mystery with "a most appealing protagonist--akin to P. D. James's Dalgleish and Ruth Rendell's Wexford, but with a quintessentially Canadian voice" (Publishers Weekly).… (altro)

Another deftly plotted mystery in the Alberg series. These characters are the most awkward people you are likely to come across and I find it fascinating how they navigate their lives without ever telling each other the important things. Cassandra is rude AND awkward. She gets furiously mad from things like the look on Karl's face (too neutral, too cop-like, etc.). They don't connect and their relationship doesn't make sense. ( )

my least favorite of the three I’ve read but the crazy cat lady’s slippery mind and the way she regroups to communicate is nearly as well done as the runaway senior with dementia that we met in the last installment - there’s an accuracy and sympathy with which these stories treat the frailties and and braveries of the aging that makes me want to read them all ( )

L. R. Wright had an uncanny ability to make her readers care about her characters. Just as in real life everyone is neither wholly good nor wholly bad. The murder in this story is almost secondary to the plot. I really liked how she introduced the book with an evening from 10 years before the events of the book as they slowly make sense in the unfolding of the story. It's not a surprise to me that this author produced another excellent book; I'm just sad that she is no longer around to produce more. ( )

#4 in the series (1992). "It's midsummer in BC, and it's hot: murderously hot, as RCMP Staff Sergeant Karl Alberg finds when his day at the beach with his ex is cut short by the discovery of a fresh corpse.
A chilling tale of jealousy, gossip, and the tangled affairs of young men and women who loved one another long ago." - Seal jacket notes.
Excellent: likeable characters, good suspense, unpredictable plot. A great series. ( )
