La batalla de Okinawa, de abril a septiembre de 1945, fue el último gran combate de la segunda guerra mundial, y uno de los más sangrientos. Participaban en ella mil quinientas embarcaciones norteamericanas, unos dos mil kamikazes japoneses y unas fuerzas de más de seiscientos cincuenta mil combatientes de ambos bandos. Su resultado fue la final muerte de ciento quince mil soldados, marinos y aviadores, y la de unos ciento cincuenta mil civiles atrapados entre los dos fuegos, en circunstancias tan terribles que les empujaron a muchos al suicidio; fue precisamente el elevado coste en vidas humanas de esta batallo lo que decidió a Truman a lanzar las bombas atómicas sobre Japón. Bill Sloan ha escrito este libro, que Evan Thomas califica de «poderoso y conmovedor», a partir de las entrevistas realizadas a unos setenta supervivientes de los combates, que quedaron marcados para siempre por esta experiencia.

The book clearly narrates the horrendous events and happenings on Okinawa. The memories recalled by the soldiers are truly emotional. The author made former soldiers the chance to change today's generation views on the war. ( )

If you only read one book about Okinawa, this would be a very strong candidate. Sloane covers all aspects of the long struggle with a deft mix of strategic overview and in depth tactical views at the squad and individual level. After a "stroll in the park" landing and limited early enemy contact, things went down hill fast.
Three well prepared defense lines based upon ridges and hills across the south end of the island were honeycombed with caves with interlocked defensive zones which required almost continual frontal assaults. The casualties were enormous on both sides with companies down to less that single platoon strength and battalions fighting as companies. With 50,000 US, 120,000 Japanese and 150, 000 civilians as casualties during the land battle added to the largest navy battle losses in history at sea served as an ominous portent for an invasion of the Japanese mainland. Strong reinforcement for the decision by President Truman to drop the A-bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. ( )
