Le personnage principal est un auteur fat qui se lance dans l'écriture d'un roman singulièrement ennuyeux qui suscite l'incompréhension générale et par conséquent son dépit. Il en ressort un récit cocasse où les envolées mélancoliques de l'auteur se heurtent au quotidien prosaïque de ses amis qui, s'ils veulent le comprendre, ont du mal à s'intéresser à sa vision. Tout le livre est parsemé de petites remarques comiques qui font que l’auteur se moque de l’auteur, le rendant attendrissant. ( )
La vie est tissée d'habitudes qui en rythment le cours et enveloppent les êtres dans un réseau pareil à un cocon. C'est pratique, mais est-ce là ce qu'on appelle vivre ? A ceux que cette question ne semble pas troubler, André Gide propose l'apologue de Paludes (1895). Il s'y met en scène à la première personne, évoluant dans un cercle littéraire où chacun parle de ses oeuvres. Lui-même travaille à une paraphrase de deux vers de Virgile qui chantent le bonheur du berger Tityre dans son champ couvert de pierres et de marécages : il imagine un Tityre à ce point résigné à son sort et aux interdits dé la société qu'il en vient à manger des vers de vase et à les aimer. Ses amis n'y voient pas malice, car les livres sont-ils lus selon l'optique où ils ont été écrits ? Gide en doute, qui exerce sa verve aux dépens de son double caricatural autant que de son public. Le pauvre auteur a beau s'évertuer à soulever les a oppressants suaires a de l'habitude, il écoutera encore le prône et n° voyagera pas plus loin que Montmorency. C'est un autre qui court à Biskra jouir du soleil d'Afrique du Nord. La séduction de Paludes tient en grande partie de ce qu'on y devine Gide en train de se libérer des vieilles contraintes. "C'est pendant que je vivais L'Immoraliste que j'écrivais Paludes" révèle-t-il dans son journal. Tout le livre est une révolte teintée d'ironie contre le conformisme de son milieu et ses propres hésitations : « - De quoi vous plaignez-vous? - Mais précisément de ce que personne ne se plaigne. »
