Fiction. Romance. HTML:For 10 years Arlene has kept her promises, and God has kept His end of the bargain. Until now.
When an old schoolmate from Possett turns up at Arlene's door in Chicago asking questions about Jim Beverly, former quarterback and god of Possett High, Arlene's break with her former hometown is forced to an end. At the same time, Burr, her long-time boyfriend, has raised an ultimatum: introduce him to her family or consider him gone. Arlene loves him dearly but knows her lily white (not to mention deeply racist)Southern Baptist family will not understand her relationship with an African American boyfriend. Reluctantly, Arlene bows to the pressure, and she and Burr embark on the long-avoided road trip back home.
As Arlene digs through guilt and deception, her patched-together alibi begins to unravel, and she discovers how far she will go for love and a chance at redemption.

Not sure why it took me sooooo long to review this book. I am sorry I waited because now I'm already forgetting why I liked it so much exactly.

The story just fascinated me. It's a literary mystery with a Southern sensibility. But at it's heart, it is the story of mother/daughter love (albeit not between a real mother/daughter), and I found it to be suspenseful throughout with a very satisfying ending. Jackson weaves together big themes (racism, love) while keeping the reader totally engaged. She writes with wit and a unique voice. The story is easy reading, but still has impact.

It's really everything I like fiction to be and everything it can be without even a hint of pretentiousness. Deserves a place on the TBR for sure. ( )

This was an interesting book. It had some unsavory parts as I expected, and I was able to guess some of the twists, but it was a good read. ( )

I do enjoy Joshilyn Jackson's stories. This was no exception; however I don't think it's her best, but it was well worth a Sunday afternoon read. A bit of a surprise there at the end. ( )

I really enjoyed the audio narration of this. I enjoyed some parts of this story more than others. For example, there were many times that I was uncomfortable with how race was discussed. I felt like the main character's partner's race was used as a way to provoke and not treated as his own individual person. Such as when Lena wanted to take Burr to her relative's retirement party just to piss off her racist family with no consideration of how uncomfortable he would be in that situation. It wasn't even a factor that was brought up at all. It was off-putting for me. But at the same time, is this because the author is tone-deaf regarding race or was it because this is who the character was and it was meant to feel awkward and uncomfortable. I did enjoy the story though and I'm likely to read more books by this author.
