In this revised edition, #1 New York Times bestselling author and nationally known stress-management consultant Dr. Richard Carlson reveals a profound breakthrough in human psychology. Most of us believe that our happiness depends on outside circumstances, that by solving our problems, improving our relationships, or achieving success we will find contentment. But Dr. Carlson clearly shows that happiness has nothing to do with forces beyond our control - in fact, he says, it is our natural state. With this simple and practical guide, Dr. Carlson shows us how to be happy now, before we solve our problems. By understanding five principles - Thought, Moods, Separate Realities, Feelings, and the Present Moment - we can discover a new mode of living that doesn't repress natural emotions yet doesn't allow feelings and thoughts to overwhelm us. You Can Be Happy No Matter What is a navigational tool that gently guides readers through life's challenges and restores the joy of living.… (altro)

A nice book. A very nice book.

He covers several "principles" devoting a chapter to each of them to explain factors that influence happiness.
1. The principle of thought
2. The principle of moods
3. The principle of separate realities
4. The principle of feelings my calling
5. The principle of the present moment

"Most partners don't give each other the space they need in a low mood; instead they react as if what their partner is saying is carved in stone." (Page 33)

"The quickest way to a higher mood is to discount the way we feel in a low state." (Page 34)

"If we confront a person about something while that person is in a low mood, we can rest assured of the result. The person will become defensive, bothered, and non-receptive. The same is true for ourselves. If we attempt to solve a problem or make an important decision while our mood level is low, we will likely disappoint ourselves and regret our behavior." (Page 35)

"Much has been said about "living in the moment." Virtually every spiritual teacher throughout history has suggested this solution. In fact, this may be one of the oldest and wisest pieces of advice for living a happier life. Yet, despite all the emphasis on this advice, very few people seen able to implement this critical principle into their daily lives." (Page 59)

"One of the surest secrets of happiness is to learn to relax when you feel down or stressed - having faith that the low period and accompanying feelings will pass if you do nothing. Your reaction to the urgency you feel keeps stress in place. So, the obvious solution is to ignore or dismiss the thoughts you have while feeling low." (Page 68)

"The more present moment oriented you become, the easier it will be to stay on track, get focused, concentrate, and achieve your goals." (Page 69) ( )

To good to be true. I've read a lot of what I can "self-help" books and this is not one of the better ones. The book repeats itself many times over to fill in the pages. This books says to control your thoughts and understand where the other person is coming from with their thoughts. There are aspects of this that could be helpful. However, the problem with many of these books is that they are built on the premise that we live in a perfect world were you just instantly make a change 100% of the time. There are many, many other books out there that are much more helpful than this one. ( )

Is a bit repetitive in order to fill the book but there are lots of simple measures to think about - good value and very helpful. ( )

Great short book. He presents principals not a step by step guide to happiness. I have read many books that question the credibility we put on our thoughts and like the way he presents this. A good summary of the five principals is at www.success-mantras.com/richard-carlson-you-can-be-happy-no-matter-what.html ( )
