A medieval whodunnit with a group of mercenaries coming to Crediton and setting up home in local hostelry... Enjoyable. ( ) A band of mercenaries arrives in Crediton on their way to the coast to embark for Gascony. Some silver plate is stolen from their leader and during the investigation of the theft the body of a serving maid at the inn where they are staying is found stuffed in a chest. Further murders follow. Very good mediaeval murder mystery with excellent world building from an author who seems to me to know his period well. Synopsis: Mercenaries arrive in town and take over a pub, and of course one of the serving girls is attracted to the 'knight' leading the band. She is found murdered and the knight's silver stolen. While investigating the theft, a female beggar is murdered. As it turns out, the knight had an affair with the woman years before. And finally, the woman the knight is bedding is murdered. All the evidence points to the knight, but did he really do it? Review: These books are getting better. This one was very interesting until I figured out who actually was the murder, then it was just 'OK'. I have virtually all of Jecks' works. I am new to Library Things so am not going to go into great detail except to say that he has given me many hours of reading pleasure and largley give him 5 stars. Although it has been some years since I found one of the later stories, I was, at the time, prompted to find the first in the series, etc. It is grand that both his former publisher and his new publisher (Simon & Schuster UK) are republishing his books in print and other formats. I have given Jecks 5 star reviews over the years since I stumbled on to him. As to his research, historically it is from primary sources wherein he writes plausible tales into the historical setting. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

A company of mercenaries is in residence in the town of Crediton. Although they are commonplace in 14th-century England, this group is particularly troublesome, seducing the local girls and showing no respect for anyone. When a robbery takes place among the mercenaries, Sir Baldwin Furnshill and Simon Puttock are on hand to investigate. Then a young girl is discovered murdered, hidden in a chest. This is only the first of the Crediton Killings--and as murder follows brutal murder, Furnshill and Puttock must discover the killer's identity before he strikes yet again.
