This book deals chiefly, though not very revealingly, with the war years, 1939-45, when Lord Ismay was Chief of Staff to the Minister of Defence and Deputy Secretary to the War Cabinet--a position that gave him access to most of the major wartime decisions and debates.
A review of a lifetime of British Army service in high posts, notably that of Churchill's representative on the Chiefs of Staff Committee in World War II and first Secretary-general of NATO. Ismay's memoirs, besides, shed important light on the decisions made in all theaters of war and on Allied-Russian relations. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

This book is primarily about the war years. There is a good deal of background to major events and decisions. The background is generally anecdotal rather than critically analytical. In fact, one gets the impression that Ismay was a genuinely nice guy and rarely had a bad word for any of his colleagues. The major arguments and disagreements of the British and American alliance are glossed over and, save for the memoirs of others, would be largely unknown to us from this book alone. Nevertheless, this is an important contribution from a man always at the center of power. ( )
