In this superb short fiction collection, Elmore Leonard, "the greatest crime writer of our time, perhaps ever" (New York Times Book Review), once again illustrates how the line between the law and the lawbreakers is not as firm as we might think. In the title story, the basis for the hit FX series Justified, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens meets up with an old friend, but they're now on different sides of the law. Federal marshal Karen Sisco, from Out of Sight, returns in "Karen Makes Out," once again inadvertently mixing pleasure with business. In "When the Women Come Out to Dance," Mrs. Mahmood gets more than she bargains for when she conspires with her maid to end her unhappy marriage. These nine stories are the great Elmore Leonard at his vivid, hilarious, and unfailingly human best.… (altro)

Fun little collection of short stories. All well done and interesting. ( )

When the Women Come Out to Dance, his new collection of nine short stories, Leonard gets even leaner and focuses on what's visceral to him -- the act of confrontation. Leonard likes conflict and the unpredictability of the decisions it causes so much that each of these stories is really a hybrid on this theme.

This book is a collection of short stories. I didn't read all of them, mainly because I normally don't read short stories. The ones I read here seemed incomplete, in a way. It was like reading a chapter of a book, and I didn't feel that I reached the end of the entire story; in fact, after the first one, I felt slightly confused, thinking there might be more to the story. But I enjoyed the ones I read while reading them.

I had watched a couple of episodes of the TV series "Justified", which is based on a character from the story "Fire in the Hole", Rayan Givens. I like the series, and hope to watch more one of these days. This is really the main reason I read these stories. To be honest, I was hoping perhaps there would be more than just the one story with Rayan Givens. Fortunately, there are more full books in the series.

I've read one or two other books by Elmore Leonard which I liked. He also wrote the book "Get Shorty", which was a movie I liked a lot. ( )

Short story collection with great Elmore Leonard writing. The last story "Tenkiller", which was more like a novella than a short story, was the best in the book in my opinion, even better than "Fire In The Hole" and that's saying a lot. So good, I wish it was a novel. ( )

A small collection of easily-read short stories, each with a quietly witty ending. Some very short, some fairly long.

I found the title story classic Leonard, from other works of his I've read. He's not my favorite writer but I enjoy his sense of humor at times.

While bad things happen in these stories, they end generally on an up note, if only because we enjoy a kind of unexpected result, often because the right person gets the upper hand. ( )

They sat close to each other on the sofa, Canavan aware of Mrs. Harris' scent and her dark hair, parted to one side, she would hold away from her face to look at the map spread open on the coffee table.
