It is sweet and kind book about what makes a perfect gift. The main character, little boy eventually understand that it has to come from a heart. He surveyed all the family members what they are getting for the new pastor in town,, but he was too little to match same gifts. It is a book about giving, community and family. Loved it! ( )

This story is about a young boy named Jory Timmons who is from a small town called Dogwood. There is a new person in town that came to lead the town’s congregation. The town usually gets together to prepare what is called a pounding. It’s when the people of the community come together to bring sweet treats to make Brother Harper feel more at home. Jory is faced with a conflict when he asks his mother if he could bring something to Brother Harper as well, but finds that he is too small to bring him anything that his family is preparing to bring to the pounding. This frustrated Jory very badly. He wants to bring the perfect gift to Brother Harper but it seems he is too small to do anything right. Then one day Jory finds himself picking the perfect skipping rocks. Him and his grandfather throw the rocks together in the pond nearby and enjoy each other’s company. Jory forgets for a day that he is too small. When it came time for the pounding Jory gives Brother Harper the ultimate gift. He gives him exactly a pound of smooth skipping rocks. Brother Harper is delighted to see that Jory spent so much time preparing his gift for him. From that day on Jory learns that the best gifts are given when they come straight from the heart! ( )

Every time he tries to find a gift for him, Jory is either too small or weak to put the gift together. He finally finds the perfect gift, skipping stones. When he gives them to Harper, he is filled with happiness. It is the best gift he could have gotten! This book gives pure examples of what love and joy is. ( )

In "The Best Kind of Gift," a little boy named Jory is trying to find the perfect present for the new parson in town, Brother Harper. Every time he tries to find a gift for him, he's either too small or too weak to get the gift together. In the end, Jory finds the perfect gift he can give Brother Harper: skipping rocks. Jory shows how great he is at finding skipping rocks and no gift compared to his at the gathering because Brother Harper loved it so much. In this historical fiction picture book, the author uses authentic language to match the country setting and time setting. This book also provides children a great lesson in how to give a gift with meaning and love. ( )

This book goes through the story of a little boy who is trying to find a gift for his new parson in their hometown. It talks about how the boy is top little to bring large gifts and is confused as to what to bring. In the end he brings him rocks to skip because it is something he himself enjoys doing. This book would be great to read to a group of young children simply because of the moral of the story, that the best kind of gift is one that comes from the heart. ( )
