Highly recommended for any national serviceman who was there... ( ) This book is a collection of the memories of servicemen in the South African Defence Force during the border wars and up to the end of apartheid (from the 1970s through till 1994). It's mostly unedited with the various stories grouped into themes from initial training through to coming under fire or township patrols. It certainly helped me start to understand a bit more about what my own father went through. My only criticism is that it lacked the stories of the Afrikaner guys involved, prefering to give the views of only the English speakers. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
In the seventies, eighties and nineties, conscription had a profound effect on hundreds of thousands of young men, particularly those who had to serve in the Angolan war. This book is a collection of reflections and memories of that time, collected by JH Thompson, who interviewed men who did National Service in the Apartheid-era South African Defence Force. Contributors include ordinary soldiers, Special Forces members, helicopter pilots, chefs and religious objectors. The book is a fast, fascinating read that captures the spirit and atmosphere, the daily duties, the boredom, fear and other intense experiences of an SADF soldier. For everyone who did military service, as well as their loved ones, this book is a must. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
