Lead your business to survival and success by following the example of legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton Sir Ernest Shackleton has been called "the greatest leader that ever came on God's earth, bar none" for saving the lives of the twenty-seven men stranded with him in the Antarctic for almost two years. Because of his courageous actions, he remains to this day a model for great leadership and masterful crisis management. Now, through anecdotes, the diaries of the men in his crew, and Shackleton's own writing, Shackleton's leadership style and time-honored principles are translated for the modern business world. Written by two veteran business observers and illustrated with ship photographer Frank Hurley's masterpieces and other rarely seen photos, this practical book helps today's leaders follow Shackleton's triumphant example. Summary: A great true life story of adventure at the turn of the 20th Century used to illustrate lessons of leadership in extreme situations.

Things I liked:

The story: I wasn't familiar with the Shackleton story and found it compelling.

Pictures: Some of the pictures in the book are well chosen and enhance the story.

Things I thought could be improved.

Management lessons: Just point lists of ideas that would have been enhanced by tighter integration with anecdotes from the main story.

Highlight: When Shackleton makes it back to the whale camp and the whalers with broken English say 'he cry' and my supervisor 'he cry too' ( )

Typical business drivel trying to turn an amazing story into corp leadership training. They do the same thing with Sun Tzu all the time. There's really nothing capitalism won't monetize and destroy. ( )

This was required reading for a leadership course and I just don't enjoy being told what to read and when. However, this is a really excellent, inspirational book and I am better for having read it. Very grateful for the experience and I hope to put into practice at least a few of Shakelton's principles. Must read for anyone in or aspiring to be in a leadership role. ( )

Not a bad book. Despite my rating it was excellent for its purposes. The guy really was a very good leader and had some interesting tactics. ( )
