The educator in me was super excited when I found these books. The boxed set has four board books, and they all share the same unique format, though they depict different themes. Inside the cover, the pages are split in half horizontally. The bottom half of the page has an illustration in Carle's beautiful style. The top half of the book is determined by the theme of the book. For the book that features colors, the top of the page shows a rectangle block of colors; for the book that is about numbers, the number word and a pictograph for each number is presented; the book about shapes names a shape and a picture of it in black silhouette; and the word book has a printed word on top that will correspond to one of the pictures below. The idea is that the child reads the number, color, word, or shape on top, and flips through the bottom pages until they find a picture that matches the top panel. These attractive board books teach children basic concepts in a fun format with attractive illustrations. My girls enjoy these books, although not as much as I want them to. Nonetheless, I love the concept and the artwork, and I know they are a welcome addition to our library. ( )
