Although he prefers magazine work, freelance photographer Alex Rutledge won't turn down an occasional crime scene shoot for the City of Key West Police Department. But when a string of murders takes his viewfinder into strangely familiar territory, Alex's mellow island lifestyle shatters. One after another, someone is killing women who have intimately crossed Alex Rutledge's path. Maybe it's a coincidence. Maybe it's a conspiracy. Or maybe he's crazy. But the connection marks Alex as the prime suspect in a case so hot it's drawn in the county sheriff, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. In a desperate race to save his name and his life, Alex dives into a one-man search for the dark, sweltering truth beneath a case that's pounding toward meltdown.… (altro)

I LIKE KEY WEST NOVELS.HIS IS THE FIRST. ALL OF ALEX GIRLFRIENDS ARE GETTING KILLED EXCEPT HIS CURRENT ONE AND SHE IS ACTING STRANGE. ( )

Somewhat convoluted but what was a good first effort on Corcoran's A. Rutledge detective series from the 1990's and early 2000's. A lot of names and introductions. Just another tall blonde guy who's cool and gets laid a lot but it is a good introduction to Key West. Interesting sense of place and most of the characters appear real butthere are a few over the top characters. Hope the next is better. ( )

I read this book to participate in a book chat group that is focusing on Floridian authors and settings. Corcoran's descriptions of Key West are lovely. I enjoyed his appreciation for Florida flowers and foliage; he includes many specific details that virtually transported me to Key West. His depiction of the Conch people—their language, customs, and lifestyle was very informative and entertaining. However, the story was not as compelling as I wanted it to be. The main character is not very believable, and many of the conversations in the story border on deeply ingrained stereotypes of women and other marginalized groups. ( )

COMMENTS: These books have been on my shelf for a long time. I am very fond of Florida books and did enjoy the setting of Key West. If it wasn't for the setting not sure I would continue w/ the series, just not warmed up to Alex Rutledge. He was just kind of bland to me. The storyline was good -- a series of women are being killed and Alex has known most, if not all of them, intimately in his past. ( )

Really enjoyed the first in the Alex Rutledge mysteries - Key West details abound, but not so much that they detract from the story. Makes me want to go to key West sooner rather than later.
