There are Hidden Ways built into the structure of existence -- linking the New World and the Newer . . . dating back to a time before time. When he brought college friends Maggie and Ian home to North Dakota, Torrie Thorsen anticipated a carefree vacation -- not werewolves, Norse gods and inconceivable worlds. But the Thorsen destiny leads them all to where the family's history began -- through secret portals into a place of legend and peril. For here, where the blade of Torrie's father once loyally served the House of the Sky, son and father both must suffer for ancient transgressions. And with war clouds gathering above the Middle Dominion, an unlikely champion will raise his sword in defense of captive friends . . . to prevent the fiery coming of the End of All Days.… (altro)

So I'm listening to a Great courses lecture series on The Vikings during my commutes and as I've been pretty heavy on the non-fiction lately, this popped into my head. It's been many years since I read this, and I had forgotten much - reminded, pleasantly, as it unfolded. The characters as written can annoy at times, but the story is creative and enjoyable. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. For a while there was a period in the 90's when 'cross over' novels based on Norse mythology were popular, and this is one of the better ones. In 20th century North Dakota, a family is involved in the doings of the gods of North mythology. The locals have to first fend of an attack of werewolves, then they have to follow them back through the Hidden Ways to the lands where the gods still walk. From there they get involved of the plots of the gods (and family members) and it goes from there. I enjoyed this book quite a bit. ( )

A new and interesting take on that fantasy "otherworld": Rosenberg does an excellent job wafting us right into his interesting "otherworld" where fertility godesses live in their retirement and Odin runs a ferry. He identifies a little too much with Ian, I think, and spends just a little too much time on small details, but then again the details add to the richness of the setting, so long as they don't bog you down. All in all, an excellent read, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series. I hope he can keep up the freshness of the ideas and vitality of the characters better in this series than he did in Guardians of the Flame.

As a big fan of Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series this was a rough read for me. The book just does not flow and I could not get into the characters at all. ( )

As I've mentioned in other reviews, I've become nervous about getting invested in series that aren't finished. Robert Jordan died before finishing his; George Martin might die before he finishes his at the rate he's going. Here's another one—10 years since the last book came out.

Fortunately, this series isn't quite as good as the others, so there's less to lose. The three volumes out so far meander along through the crossover from 20th century America to Norse lore. While there is sometimes some interesting action, the characters are rather flat and trite.

Given that I doubt this series will be finished, I'd give the whole thing a miss. ( )
