This book was recommended to me by my meditation coach, and I'm not sure I was quite prepared to accept what was being offered. But, there is a lot of power in this book, a lot of really meaty concepts in the short 108 chapters.

Each of the the chapters is meant to be like a mala bead, something to think about and keep you on track while meditating. But they are really packed with wisdom. Almost too packed, in that I would find myself chewing on a sentence for a long time before moving on to the next one.

This is my first encounter with the author, but I'm certain I will be looking into her other works. ( )

Comfortable with Uncertainty offers short, stand-alone teachings designed to help us cultivate compassion and awareness amid the challenges of daily living. Gleaned from Pema Chdrn's best-selling books, these passages explore topics of loving-kindness, mindfulness, "nowness," letting go, and working with painful emotions. They also offer meditation instructions for heightening awareness and overcoming habitual patterns that block happiness. By the end of the cycle of teachings, the listener will have completed the basic training for becoming a "warrior-bodhisattva," one who courageously takes up the path of awakening compassion.

Dans ce livre sont proposés cent huit textes courts susceptibles d’aider les lecteurs à cultiver la compassion et la conscience éveillée dans la vie quotidienne. L’auteur nous met en garde contre la brutalité avec laquelle, de façon duelle, le chercheur de vérité travaille sur lui-même. La sagesse est fluide, et cette brutalité vient de la résistance à la vie telle qu’elle est : « l’esprit ne cesse de rechercher la sécurité, et ces zones de sûreté n’arrêtent pas de se détruire. » « Entrer en amitié avec soi-même », voilà une orientation qui ressort de ce livre. Mais ceci est impossible tant que le chercheur n’a pas vu en lui, sur le vif, à quel point il est en guerre contre lui-même et le flux de la vie. Il s’agit donc de voir la façon dont l’ego agit en maître du jeu, le connaître, le sentir et le ressentir dans ses moindres manifestations. L’une des grandes pratiques est ainsi celle de la méditation qui peut nous amener à dé-couvrir notre paysage intérieur. « La méditation assise fournit le moyen de se rapprocher de ses pensées et de ses émotions et d’entrer en rapport avec son corps… Peu à peu, par la méditation, on voit qu’il y a des brèches dans son dialogue intérieur. Au milieu du monologue incessant qu’est le bavardage mental, on fait l’expérience d’une pause, comme si on sortait d’un rêve. On reconnaît sa capacité de se détendre dans la clarté, l’espace, l’éveil sans fin qui existe déjà dans son esprit. On connaît des moments de présence simples, directs et nets. » Ed. 108 teachings from Pema Chodron, collected from her other writings... I knew it was a collection of teachings, but I was unaware it was a compilation from her other books, most of which we have. Not a problem, though. This is a distillation of sorts, taking bits and pieces and combining them by the editor to "cultivate fearlessness and compassion" specifically.

I found it to be a book full of short pieces that are easily accessible and helpful to a student of the path. ( )
