Deep in the heart of 19th century London, a young nobleman named Cain walks the shadowy cobblestone streets of the aristocratic society into which he was born. Forced to become an earl upon the untimely death of his father, Cain assumes the role of head of the Hargreaves, a noble family with a dark past. With Riff, his faithful manservant, and Mary Weather, his 10-year-old half sister, Cain investigates the mysterious crimes that seem to follow him wherever he goes. I didn't expect the ending twist although it certainly fits what we were presented with as did the final end for all the characters from Riff to Mary Weather and, of course, Cain. Although not quite tied up in a bow Cain's resolution fit the atmosphere of the series. Indeed, I had to re-read the final pages multiple times, along with the author's ending notes on the series, to finally understand what had happened. I don't think that it would be difficult for most people to get, just me because although I've been reading manga for a few years now, sometimes I do forget that it's necessary to pay equal attention to the images and the words at the same time (which is why I have to go back so often to get what's going on).
The pictures in this volume, particularly the cover image and the back image, really got me especially in view of what happens between Riff and Cain.
So, I've tried to give this review without spoilers. It is certainly a great one for those who like dark gothic tales of twisted relationships and murder. I didn't so much find it scary as very disturbing. The artwork is great, the storyline is fascinating and I would highly recommend, even with the nightmares. ( )
