Quel che mi ha dato più fastidio, nel portare in giro un libro cartaceo, è che avesse un titolo da romanzetto Harmony, e chissà... forse un po' lo è pure e sono solo i decenni passati ad avergli dato il lustro di letteratura. La Mitford, come gia sapevo dalla lettura della storia familiare, attinge al proprio vissuto e agli aneddoti di quella gabbia di matti che era la sua casa per creare un buon romanzo, che termina con un pugno nello stomaco.
l primo romanzo di Nancy Mitford, in parte autobiografico, nel quale l'autrice ci offre un ritratto irriverente dei vizi e delle virtù della nobiltà inglese nella prima metà del XX secolo: al centro della narrazione si trova la straordinaria famiglia dei Radlett, signori di campagna dai gusti un po' eccentrici, presso i quali la nipote Fanny trascorre lunghi periodi della propria infanzia e adolescenza. Nei ricordi di Fanny ormai adulta spicca la cugina Linda, bella, passionale, sventata e coraggiosa: è proprio lei a ''inseguire l'amore''. La seconda guerra mondiale segna la fine di un'epoca, ma non appanna mai l'umorismo irresistibile e la frizzante ironia con cui le stravaganze dei Radlett meritano di essere raccontate. We worked hard, mending and making and washing, doing any chores for Nanny rather than actually look after the children ourselves. I have seen too many children brought up without Nannies to think this at all desirable. In Oxford, the wives of progressive dons did it often as a matter of principle; they would gradually become morons themselves, while the children looked like slum children and behaved like barbarians.
"Education! I was always led to suppose that no educated person ever spoke of notepaper, and yet I hear poor Fanny asking Sadie for notepaper. What is this education? Fanny talks about mirrors and mantelpieces, handbags and perfume, she takes sugar in her coffee, has a tassel on her umbrella, and I have no doubt that if she is ever fortunate enough to catch a husband she will call his father and mother Father & Mother. Will the wonderful education she is getting make up to the unhappy brute for all these endless pinpricks? Fancy hearing one's wife talk about notepaper - the irritation!'
