Short non-fiction about the Ernest Shackleton’s voyage to Antarctica on the Endurance, the stranding of the vessel, and how he and his crew made it back to civilization. It is written in a straight-forward manner and highlights Shackleton’s leadership skills. This is a good book if you are looking for the basics of what happened. I can also recommend [b:Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage|139069|Endurance Shackleton's Incredible Voyage|Alfred Lansing|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1391329559l/139069._SY75_.jpg|900140] by [a:Alfred Lansing|29034|Alfred Lansing|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png] if you are looking for a more detailed version. I listened to the audiobook, competently read by Taylor Mali. ( )

Great Book! Five Stars! Billed as a YA read with about 135 pages, but incredibly interesting from this adult’s point of view. It does not bog you down with minute details yet tells the fascinating story of Ernest Shackleton’s Endeavor voyage to Antarctica, attempting to be the first people to traverse the continent. Instead, they ended up stranded, their ship crushed in route by a freezing ocean. Shackleton’s incredible leadership assured that everyone survived being stranded there for over 2 years. An amazing read which includes many good photographs from the journey as well. Highly recommended.

I've always been intrigued and inspired by Shackleton - a man who was obsessed with Antarctica and failed to reach his goal repeatedly, but who was a true leader and the definition of perseverance.

Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World is a great retelling of Shackleton and the Endurance's story for all ages. Armstrong portrays the stark realities of what the men endured, pulling no punches but refraining from wallowing in the misery. The various journal excerpts really add to the variety of perspectives and authenticity of the events.

Armstrong clearly did a lot of research and is passionate about the subject; her writing is readable and interesting without ever dumbing anything down or using jargon. I'm left with even more admiration for Shackleton than I had before. ( )

Jennifer Armstrong's "Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World" tells the miraculous and amazing story of Ernest Shackleton and his men surviving the notorious shipwreck near Antarctica in the early 20th century. The men survived after being without a ship for over a year and remarkably made it back to their homes in London. Armstrong tells their story.

I didn't really realized that YA non-fiction existed before this book. Sure, I read non-fiction books for kids as a child but I never had the opportunity to transition before I was thrown in to adult non-fiction books. I loved this book; I loved the simplicity of the story but the lack of washing over important details. It was the perfect balance of detail and length for me. It was wonderfully researched and explained. ( )

An interesting story about the agonizing expedition of the Endurance from England to Antarctica in 1914. Shackleton and his 28 crew members ventured out to be the first to cross the southern continent from one side to the other. Unfortunately, weather prevented them from making it to Antarctica; after being trapped for months in ice they had to abandon the Endurance. After leaving the Endurance they were forced them to make a perilous journey on 3 small boats back to safety. During this journey, Shackleton was forced to make sacrifices and challenging decisions to keep his crew alive. ( )
