Arthur’s bet friend Buster goes out of town for a month and Arthur is hurt when he does not get any letters or postcards from Buster but finds out their other friends have. The day before Buster returns the mailman shows up with a stack of letters from Buster that were being delivered to the wrong house for weeks so Arthur knows he was not forgotten and he and Buster have a happy reunion. This story is a level one easy reader; the text is large and there are few words on each line. Lines tend to be broken up by sentences or in places where there are natural pauses. Many of the multiple syllable words are ones that are commonly used (like “yesterday”) or words that are made up of two one-syllable words (like “postcard”), making them possible for beginning readers to decipher while feeling a sense of accomplishment for reading big words. The illustrations are colorful and crisp, and depict exactly what the text says which is helpful to new readers who are struggling with the words. Although the plot is very straightforward, the author lets readers in on a little joke between Arthur and Buster at the end—one that only people who read the story would be able to understand—instilling a sense of pride and satisfaction in new readers for both finishing and comprehending the story!
