I am going to have to find the others in this series--I really like the main character and the time period. It is nice to find a historically accurate mystery for a change--usually very modern ideas are forced on all of the characters these days. My only complaint is that my copy is incredibly full of typos that would drive the hero, Fairfax, completely batty. A few times they even made the meaning of the sentence a little hard to discern. So, take note, publisher--keep a closer eye on the proofreading and printing next time! ( ) These Georgian era mysteries are exceptionally vivid with a feel for the details of the period that goes beyond aristocratic dress and manners. March moves confidently through various levels of society including such lesser known events as the enclosures, slavery, and the controversial rise of Methodism. Her characters are well drawn and generally very believable. One caveat that I have, not so much a criticism of the writing as a piece of information for readers, March has no qualms about breaking the reader's heart by killing off likable victims by murderers seemed appealing and whose crimes seem almost like a betrayal of trust. The solving of the crime doesn't necessary solve all the characters' problems; there is sometimes an aching sense of futility. I assume that readers know their own tastes. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

It's 1761. Robert Fairfax, chancing upon a stagecoach tipped into a ditch, two of its passengers lying dead, is propelled into a baffling and complex investigation. He soon suspects that this is more than a simple highway robbery. One of the two corpses is apparently a wealthy banker, Nicholas Twelvetree, but Nicholas Twelvetree is alive in the neighbouring town - paralysed with fear. The other corpse appears to be that of an escaped lunatic - a revelation made by a Methodist preacher who is universally despised. But the coach record states that there were three passengers on board that day. So where is the third? Fairfax traces murderous designs behind an intricate pattern of deception and must piece together this deadly puzzle - knowing that a ruthless killer will stop at nothing to prevent him ...
