This book tells the story of the quest to answer an important question: What is this universe of ours all about? From the ancient city of Alexandria with its gigantic lighthouse and steam-powered vehicles, to faraway lands where Hindu and Arab mathematicians invented the number zero, the author invites readers of all ages to meet the forefathers of modern science and experience their greatest discoveries in astronomy, math, and physics.--From publisher description.… (altro)

In a way, this book summarizes scientific history. To do this, the book starts with the birth of the universe, ending at how science works. Including science, this book covers math, language arts, technology, engineering, geography, and philosophy is also included in the book. The book also covers misconceptions about science. Fortunately for readers, the book also covers the correct facts about science.

I enjoy this book because of the diverse educational topics. In addition to the topics, small details in the margins is also included to add additional facts. I don't think this book deserves a perfect rating because it just briefly skims each chapter. Other than that, the book is very enjoyable. ( )

1st in a projected series of 6 books by a "VIrginia Beach grandmother" already famous for her 10-volume history of the US. A teacher & a journalist, Joy was so disgusted by the way committees had managed to eliminate nearly all content from textbooks on American history that she wrote her own series, the best selling A History of Us. The new series, The Story of Science, is her attempt to work the same magic for science.

Skimmed, looks very helpful and interesting in learning the background for science understanding as the teacher. ( )

At first I was put off by the narrative, which is directed at a younger audience. At the same time I was put off by the numerous insets, which seemed to distract rather than supplement the rest. But the whole arrangement really grew on me as the book progressed. Many of the diagrams are well designed and the photographs are well chosen.

It should not appeal to fundamentalist home-schoolers, but might work well for the other kind.

Most of the math was easy to work through, but it turns out that Hero's formula for the area of a triangle is not so easy to understand and can only be derived from the familiar (1/2)bh through pages of mind numbing algebra. ( )

This book was put together in an incredible way. Every page has colorful pictures that go along very nicely with the content. The organization of this book is excellent. It’s very easy to navigate through the book and the reader would have no trouble finding a certain topic within the book. The table of contents can be a little vague, however the titles of the chapters make the reader very interested. For example, one title is “Ionia? What’s Ionia?” The index is put together very nicely in the back of the book and allows the reader to navigate the book. It even has a few pictures, which makes it a little more exciting. The book also contains little stories that accompany the chapters perfectly. For example, there is a short story about Prime Numbers in Euclid’s chapter. Another feature I like about this book is that it could be read from cover to cover, however it’s probably used more to jump around. Although it’s very bright and colorful, it still has a professional academia look to it. The cover seems to shout for smart people only with different science and math pictures. The inside covers are blank, however the reddish-orange color makes it seem more professional than if a picture were placed there. Lastly, the book gives further readings to the readers in case anyone wants to further their knowledge. ( )

..."she writes in a way that is very accessible for the non-scientist."
"Religion is treated as something with no rational basis, but simultaneously as something that is "good for society."
..."sometimes, it seems like Hakim is writing to fifth and sixth graders while other times to high school students."
