It was sort-of interesting, but I just didn't get into the characters. The plot was a combination of too predictable (of course the handsome Catholic priest and lovely Jewish midwife will fall in love) and too far-fetched (a Catholic priest and a Jewish midwife fall in love?). ( ) A promising premise followed with insanely gratuitous sex (in graphic detail) on what seemed like every other page, with a story that is mostly melodramatic cliches. There are some historical truths here, but I'd rather read a nonfiction book than wade through this junk. Don't waste your time unless you're looking for a story where everyone has sex, no matter how horrifically inappropriate the setting. The book was ok. I thought the story was great but it felt very rushed. The author could have taken more time to get into details but then the book would have been very long. I was also uncomfortable with some of the sex scenes. I felt that they were really unnecessary to the story. Ultimately, the book was much more Harlequin romance-y than I was anticipating. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
This is the story of Ruth bas Elazar Saul, a Jewish midwife who returns to her home of Deutz, outside Cologne in Germany. Imbued with the radical ideas of Spinoza and with the ancient Hebrew Kabbalism, Ruth's revolutionary methods of dealing with illness lead to accusations of witchcraft and imprisonment. Her love affair with Detleff von Tennen, a local Catholic bishop, may save her in the short term, but at a time of brutal repression and religious persecution there are few options for those who break taboos.
