Slender volume by the noted economist, which discusses various personalities he knew in a long career in and out of government service from the 1930s to the 1970s. He does set forth some sensible criteria for which figures he includes and excludes -- though he excludes Nixon, he doesn't stoop from including a snarky comment and a copy of a letter Nixon worked on when Nixon was at OPA. There's also some sneering references to President Reagan being "mentally detached," which don't square with history. I'm not sure he didn't allow a personal liking for Nehru to colour his perceptions of the man himself. The chapter on Albert Speer, to my mind, also violates his criteria, in that he didn't really know Speer, but interviewed him a handful of times. Doesn't give you a very nice impression of Galbraith; he comes across as just as contemptuous of the rabble as Adlai Stevenson did. Not particularly recommended. "Drawing on a lifetime of access to many of the greatest public figures, Galbraith creates a rich and uniquely personal history of the century - a history he helped to shape. We are invited to hear FDR on the Great Depression and World War II, Albert Speer, the Third Reich's architect and armaments minister, on the boorishness and incompetence of the Nazi leadership; John F. Kennedy, from youth to the presidency; Jacqueline Kennedy's shrewd judgments of the White House inner circle. In this clear-eyed, unsparing, and amusing look back at the world and the people he has known, Galbraith tells what these leaders did - how they looked to him then and how they look to him now - with unforgettable reminiscences and a rich infusion of engaging anecdotes."--Jacket.
