Om met de negatieve zaken te beginnen: er zijn een aantal inconsequneties die storen. Zo wordt er op een zeker moment gesproken dat Jozef steeds minder vaak langskomt en geregeld een volle week wegbleef, terwijl kort daarop gezegd wordt dat Mathilde nu 4 weken in het huis is. Daarnaast wordt de kleine Felix pas laat ten tonele gevoerd en ik heb het idee dat hij al binnen een jaar heeft leren lopen en praten. Tegenover deze mindere aspeceten staat echter dat Van Deyssel meesterlijk is in het beschrijven van de sfeer. En als je denkt dat je het verhaal wel ongeveer hebt begrepen komt dan het 13e hoofdstuk, waar ook harry Prick over schrijft. Meesterlijk zoals Van Deyssel dit beschrijft, je wilt het in 1 ruk lezen en ondergaan. Natuurlijk nu enigszins gedateerd, maar daarom niet minder goed. ( )

Wat mij opviel tijdens het lezen: een huiselijk leven zonder geluiden: geen telefoon, radio, televisie, geen geluid van auto of trein...
Met de trein van Amsterdam naar Vreeland en dan met een tentwagentje verder naar de 's Gravelandseweg in Hilversum. Een urenlange reis. Het is nog terug te vinden via Google Maps. ( )
