This is an important book which tells the story of Miss Crandall, who opened her school for African American women despite the odds being stacked against her. This book is a book of poems written from the point of view of the students who attended Miss Crandall's school. It goes into detail from first arriving at the school to the hardships that they had to endure to the end when Miss Crandall closes the school as she can no longer protect the students. This is a great book that would be good to use in history class as though it isn't fully factual it is based on truth. ( )
