Hilaire P. R. Belloc (1870-1953) was an Anglo-French writer and historian who became a naturalised British subject. He was one of the most prolific writers in England during the early twentieth century, known as an orator, poet, satirist, man of letters and political activist. He is most notable for his Catholic faith, which had a strong impact on most of his works and his writing collaboration with G. K. Chesterton. He was a noted disputant, with a number of long-running feuds, but is also widely regarded as a humane and sympathetic man. In this important book THE GREAT HERESIES written in 1936, Belloc predicts the re-emergence of Islam with mind-blowing accuracy, which we see in today's world, and expertly tackles all the other major heresies throughout history as well, which threatened to subdue true Faith.… (altro)

Hilaire Belloc examines the five most destructive heretical movements to have affected Christian Civilization: Arianism, Mohammedanism (Islam), Albigensianism (Cathar), The Reformation (Protestant), and “The Modern Phase.” Belloc describes how these movements began, how they spread, and how they continued to influence the world up until the time of his writing (1936). The Chapter on Islam is especially relevant in light of current events; in it Belloc accurately predicts the renewal of Jihadist aggression towards Western Civilization.

After nearly 100 years, this book is still relevant, particularly the sections on Islam and the Modern world. Christianity is under attack from outside and inside (by notional Christians). How it is to survive is the question Belloc leaves to us. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because it is Catholic-centric (its intended audience) and the viewpoint is Western, patriarchal, and to a degree, racist. In other words, you can tell the book was written by a white European in the early 20th century. That said, I encourage others to read it because Belloc makes many valid observations that are applicable today. ( )

Gemengde gevoelens.

En tenslotte deze lelijke uitschuiver: ‘…and the forces which are making for the destruction of our culture, notably the Jewish Communist propaganda from Moscow….’. Jammer. ( )
