I received one morning a letter, written in pale ink on glassy, blue-lined note-paper, and bearing the postmark of a little Nebraska village. This communication, worn and rubbed, looking as if it had been carried for some days in a coat pocket that was none too clean, was from my uncle Howard, and informed me that his wife had been left a small legacy by a bachelor relative, and that it would be necessary for her to go to Boston to attend to the settling of the estate. He requested me to meet her at the station and render her whatever services might be necessary. On examining the date indicated as that of her arrival, I found it to be no later than tomorrow. He had characteristically delayed writing until, had I been away from home for a day, I must have missed my aunt altogether.… (altro)

Her eyes were closed, but the tears were glistening on her cheeks, and I think in a moment more they were in my eyes as well. It never really dies, then, the soul? It withers to the outward eye only, like that strange moss which can lie on a dusty shelf half a century and yet, if placed in water, grows green again.

What an amazing story. It incorporates all those wonderful traits that I have come to associate with Willa Cather: the beautiful language, the understanding of the difficult life of the plains, the ebb and flow of the music of the soul; and it delivers a strong message built around the contrasts of the city cultures and the farming realities.

I want to say much more, but I don’t want to give away the story for anyone who has not read it. If you love Cather, you will love this; if you do not know Cather, I cannot think of a better way to get an introduction.

Wagner matinee is a short story, published separately, taken from Youth and the Bright Medusa, by Willa Cather.

What I like about Cather's is its freshness. This straightforward story is about a woman, who has been living on a farm in rural America for more than 30 years, and visits the a concert with her nephew or cousin in a big city. While the young man fears how she might like the music by Wagner, she is moved to tears, and overcome by emotion as the concert ends. The story shows part of the tragedy of (im-) migrants who once lived in cultured centres, moving to rural outposts and being cut off from the cultural life in the cities. ( )
