Oscar Peterson's autobiography, A Jazz Odyssey, is as richly varied as the life and career it recounts - at once funny, searing, illuminating and abounding in humanity and warmth. It is a noble memorial to a man whom many regard as one of the twentieth century's finest artists. 'The pianist Oscar Peterson has amassed a reputation as one of Jazz's virtuosos. Reading on, especially for jazz fans, yields rewards.' - NEW YORK TIMES ' among the most vivid and tender jazz recollections currently in print. As a source of musical insight , intimate anecdotes, personal portraits of bandmates and impresarios, and simply as a highly readable account of just what makes a jazz musician tick, A Jazz Odyssey is worth seeking out' - JAZZ REVIEW… (altro)

A Jazz Odyssey; The Life of Oscar Peterson is de autobiografie van de Canadese jazzpianist Oscar Peterson (1925-2007).

Op een moment neemt zijn vader een album mee van pianist Art Tatum;

“Tell me what you think of this piano player.” I later found out it was Art Tatum playing the Tiger Rag. My first reaction was to laugh, because here was my Dad trying to fool me with a recording of two piano players. He asked me what I was laughing at and I replied that I was on to his joke and that I knew it was two pianists. He seemed to take a lot of pleasure informing me that this was one man – and blind at that!

Peterson is in zijn boek al snel aanbeland in de Verenigde Staten waar hij zijn debuut maakt in Carnegie Hall. Hij raakt snel thuis in de jazzscene daar en komt op een feestje thuis bij zangeres Billie Holiday. Dat geeft een aardig inkijkje uit de eerste hand…als Peterson de trap oploopt moet hij de vaste begeleider van Holiday ontwijken die de trap afgegooid wordt. Tegen hem doet Billie wel aardig;

“Oh, just step over that son of a bitch and come right up, Honey.”

Zoals gezegd wordt er ruim aandacht besteed aan de optredens met Jazz At The Philharmonic en het leven onderweg in de bus en in de hotels. Aan anekdotes geen gebrek zoals wanneer Peterson op zijn kont wordt geslagen door Dizzy Gillespie als hij zich aan het scheren is of wanneer hij voor de trompetspeler van het spul wordt aangezien. Hilariteit, maar ook mooie verhalen zoals wanneer al die grootheden voor hun eigen plezier muziek gaan maken in de bus;

I remember Ella asking Roy Eldridge if he recalled the way that Billie Holiday used to do this or that tune. Upon which Lady Fitz launched into a “Lady Day” version of What A Little Moonlight Will Do. She glanced around at Herbie Ellis, gesturing for him to get his guitar, which he did, supplying her with that beautiful soft-finger strum as only he can do. Out of nowhere, Roy uncased his horn, put in the mute, and commenced playing a beautiful obbligato to her vocal…Here was this great big Greyhound bus rolling down the Kansas highway on a picture-perfect evening: inside some of the greatest jazz people that could ever be mustered at any one place and at any given time. There sits Ella in het seat, her eyes closed, totally engrossed in making each word of the lyric count to its fullest. Behind her sits Herbie Ellis, his guitar perched across his knees playing a soft accompaniment, while Roy Eldridge and Lester Young engage in playing soft, sensitive lines behind her. Ray Brown somehow manages to balance himself and his bass in the aisle in order to lend Fitz his support. She sang her heart out, song after song, and we all applauded and grinned in excitement and appreciation, for we all knew that we were a part of a very special “musical moment.”

Misschien wel het mooiste fragment in het boek. Peterson gaat in op veel collega’s waarmee hij samenwerkt en pikt er bassisten en drummers speciaal uit. Met veel kan hij goed opschieten, met anderen, zoals drummer Buddy Rich, wat minder;

During one number he happened to look down and saw me. He leaned over my way and said, “You hate me, don’t you?” When I nodded, he replied, “Yeah, but I can play these God-damn drums!”

Legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson tells his own story in this autobiography. It is a book filled with anecdotes of his time on the road performing with most of the jazz greats active between the late 1940s and the end of century. Since Peterson was equally proficient as a soloist, accompanist, small combo performer, or participant in larger ensembles, he was nearly constantly at the keyboard. That leads to a life of jazz clubs, hotel rooms, and concert halls. Without much of a fixed locale, the focus naturally has to be the music and this is what most of the book concentrates upon — Peterson’s musical ideas and his impressions of each of his colleagues.

The most consistent and clear part of the text consists in his account of his early life in Montreal, his personal and musical upbringing (these were intertwined), and his emergence as a jazz prodigy in his teens. Although his entire family were accomplished musicians, it was Oscar alone who had both the talent and the performance skills to achieve a career on the stage. Much of the remainder of the book feels less narratively direct as Peterson describes first one musical partner and then the next, with brief insights. However, for a fan of the great personages of jazz, the book offers much to enjoy. And what comes across most, apart from the boyish playfulness that Oscar and his best friends delighted in, is his unswerving devotion to the craft of jazz. It’s not always something that can be articulated in words, but OP, as he was known, makes a huge effort to lift the veil on his creative method and ideas.

Worth reading for the jazz enthusiast or merely the jazz curious. ( )
