The author describes him as 'the looks of Clint Eastwood and the voice of Gomer Pyle' - cute but Bob Lee has a laconic drawl which is quite unlike Gomer. This book starts in the days of the Vietnam War protests in Washingon, DC which had me wondering and not too engaged but this is essential for the book. It also fills in some of the blanks for us Bob Lee fans. The rest of the book is split between Vietnam and the US - Oregon and the DC area. Ironically, the Vietnam part is located in Da Nang, Hoi An, and Kham Duc - all places we'll be visiting next March! The Kham Duc part is what made Bob Lee the legend he became and fill in essential blanks in other books. The ending could have been better for me but didn't really detract. (  ) martinhughharvey | Jul 31, 2017 | If you had told me that I would LOVE the book, AND the series and begin to seriously think about owning them in hardcover and put them on my favorite" shelf, I probably would have told you some very unpleasant things that I would do to you before that happened. And look at me now! I am absolutely loving this series. Part of it is that it is so well written. And having consistently been dipping my toe in the indie world, I appreciate good writing even more so. The story is gripping, the characters are real and believable and I LOVE reading about a sniper. Something about the lone wolf aspect is really drawing me in. And the honest look at the downside to it all as well. this is just a really well written book that I enjoyed and have been enjoying and I look forward to the rest of the series as well. I enjoy them enough that I might just go watch that movie, Shooter again for the hey of it..." ( ) BookstoogeLT | Dec 10, 2016 | The first part of the story details how Fenn was given an assignment to Viet Nam, even though he only had about a year to go on his enlistment. He was given this punishment because he wouldn't betray another Marine who was in contact with the peace marchers in Washington, D. C. In Viet Nam, the two men team up and cause such havoc to the Viet Cong that the VC ask their Russian advosor for help. The advisor is able to identify Swagger by the weapon the sniper uses and his choice of ammunition. It turns out that Swagger had been in competition against the Russian and beat the Russian. Now this man is sent into the field against Swagger to try to eliminate him and his spotter, Donnie. As the plot moves swiftly from Viet Nam to Swagger's home on a farm in Iowa, I was so caught up in the plot and drama that I was almost spellbound. The author has given an excellent story with a number of plot twists that left me shaking my head. Needless to say, nothing was as it seemed. The novel is a good example of why the author is considered one of the top thriller writers in America. The plot is unique and Swagger is a great character and true hero. Highly recommended.
