All in all a very good read with a great deal that merits further reflection, wrestling and action. Sophisticated throughout, esoteric at times, this book is not for undergraduates, but teachers of graduate courses in OT might assign certain chapters as required reading. For anyone who hasn't given up on the idea of scripture as authoritative for the Church, this is a must-read book. This is an important book for three reasons. It advocates a canonical approach to the interpretation of the Old Testament and in its name lays down a bold challenge to the way Old Testament is interpreted and taught by theological faculties. It advances a reading of Isaiah as a book of scripture. And it lays out a biblical theological way to think about conflicted issues in the life of the church. The value of this volume will probably most often be seen in its discrete studies of specific texts and issues and the varying ways it seeks to keep the two testaments theologically together as the Scripture of the church.
Word without End advocates a canonical approach to biblical interpretation, one that does not allow the New Testament to eclipse the interpretation of the Old Testament. In so doing, Seitz directly challenges the way in which the Old Testament is currently being read and taught in theological seminaries. By attending to atheology, a aexegesis, a and apracticeaathe three divisions of the bookaSeitz models a reading of the Old Testament as Scripture that lays out a theological foundation for the life of the church.
