It was a random pick from the library shelves on a day when all the books I wanted were unavailable. A Dublin born author with a degree in modern American literature sounds perfect. It began well, too. A 21st century story of an Irish boy and his relationships with a series of rather interesting older people, including his grandfather, is very much up my alley. However the magic element in the story (telepathy!) turned me against it. Then the series of coincidences that stretched believability beyond limits made me want to almost stop reading. The heavy symbolism isn't my cup of tea, either. I did finish it so it definitely does have some positive features. Unusually for me, however, I take the opposite view to LT reader, HelenBaker: I now definitely do NOT want to read the sequel. In fact, I don't want to read any more of this author's works. ( ) A beautiful poignant story about relationships, especially between disparate ages. 'J' lives with his grandfather, who also happens to be his teacher in a small village in Ireland. his mother and grandmother are both dead. On the morning of his confirmation, his grandfather presents him with a letter from his mother. He struggles to confront it and refuses to be confirmed, shaming, he believes, his grandfather. He tries to destroy the letter but his grandfather rescues it and encourages him to read it. she reveals the name of his father but because of the fire damage only the first two letters of his first and last name remain and his occupation. 'J' decides to runaway unable to return and face the close community. From there, he embarks on a journey across Europe seeking his own identity. Once again this author has produced a book that I wanted to keep returning to. I now need to reread the sequel to this book, Boy and Man. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
A beautiful and moving novel about a young boy's journey from childhood to adulthood from the bestselling author of Four Letters of Love Niall Williams draws us into life in a small village in Ireland where a boy is growing up and making his first tentative steps to becoming a man. Questioning everything in an attempt to make sense of the world he is discovering through books, he is on the cusp of an understanding of what it is to be a man. But, when the Master, his caring old guardian, gives him a letter from his long-dead mother, his world comes crashing down. Learning for the first time that his father is not dead, as he had been led to believe, the boy must relearn everything he thought he knew. He sets out to find his father, piecing together the information he can glean from his mother's letter: he is a journalist for the BBC, he has lived in London, and he is a Muslim. The boy sets out to find his father. Arriving in London, disorientated and alone, he finds himself at the centre of a terrorist attack as the BBC is bombed and hundreds are killed and injured. Taken under the caring wing of Sister Bridget, a nun also caught up in the chaos, he refuses to allow this catastrophe to move him from his goal; he must find his father. This is the heart-warming tale of a young boy trying to find his way in a changing world, a world where no-one is safe and where terrorists seek to destroy all that civilisation holds dear.
