I liked this books for three reasons. First, the illustrations enhanced the story by giving the readers an insight on what the flea looks like within the Hispanic culture as well as the food and items they exchange during the flea. Non-Hispanic individuals may not be aware of aspects of their culture, and are able to see it through the images. Second, the writing is offered in two languages, Spanish and English, on each page which is very helpful to learn new vocabulary. Third, I like that the book pushes readers to broaden their perspectives and learn about other cultures and cultural traditions that may be similar or different compared to their own. The main message to be taken away from this book is the importance of family traditions and learning about one’s culture.

I liked this book for a few different reasons. I liked this book at first because it is in both English and Spanish, which would be great to have in the classroom for English Language Learners. I also liked this book because of the illustrations as they are very colorful and bright. This story is about a boy who learns the value of community when going through the flea market with his grandma. I liked that this book shows a little bit about the Hispanic culture. I feel that the big idea of this story is how important ones' community is and how one should cherish their culture. ( )

The book "Grandma and Me at the Flea" is a great example of a bilingual text. I loved the concept of being able to read the story in both English and Spanish, and found its format of such very easy to navigate.

The story does an excellent job of showcasing a cultural experience called a "flea", which is a flea market, but from a Mexi-American standpoint. In fact, the author notes that it was semi-autobiographical about his own abuela.

The message us subtle, but it is very clearly pay kindness forward, and it will always be returned to you. ( )

I really liked reading through this book. One of the reasons I enjoyed this story was because it was bilingual in both english and spanish. The narrator was a hispanic child, and in the english section she would say something like, "your mama left us rebozos, her shawls." Certain would would be included in both english as well as spanish. This helped teach me spanish words as well as give me a glimpse into the hispanic culture. Another reason I liked this book was for the illustrations included on each page. The illustrations were full of bright colors and vivid details which kept be engaged and excited to read deeper into the story. The main message of the story is the family traditions are important and special. ( )

I liked this book because it was bilingual and because it provides vocabulary words in italics. The bilingual aspect of the book makes this book relatable to a greater amount of readers for obvious reasons. The vocabulary words were Spanish words such as fotonovelas(comic books), pelon(baldy), or zarape(blankets). In the English part of each page, after these words were written, the translation of them were written in the text. This allows for the readers who do not know Spanish to learn a few words. It also makes it easier for Spanish speaking readers to read the English part of the text and make connections to their prior knowledge of language. The main reason I rated this book so low is because I think the translator did a poor job making the English version very clear. The biggest example of this was on the first page when "Son las cinco de la manana; es domingo!" was translated to, "Wake up, Juanito. Five o'clock Sunday." Saying "five o'clock, Sunday" basically makes no sense. There is a clear translation that sounds like something someone would actually say in English and that is "Wake up, Juanito! It's five o'clock in the morning and it's Sunday!" The translator did not make this sentence clear. I also had a problem with the fact that the main character's nickname was apparently "baldy", but in the pictures he has hair. I feel as if this is also a disconnect. The big idea of this book was to give help and you will receive the same because Juanito's grandma helps all of the vendors at the flea market and in turn, they give her many valuables. ( )
