I have a great love of urban fantasy, and an FBI that deals with violent paranormal activity, perfect. The agent in charge specializes in the mythical creatures talked about in Indian cultures. The author gives additional information after the story about the creature in this story. I definitely recommend this book. Ice music – A Tale of QalupalikIce music is about Chimalis Burton, employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigations of Violent Paranormal Activity, and her attempts to solve the case of a Senator’s missing daughter. The daughter has been kidnapped by a cryptid who lures children into the icy waters in Alaska. This book is well-written and definitely an interesting story, but I didn’t really like it. The kidnapping of children is not easy to read, and I found some of the interaction between the cryptic and the child immoderate. This was a pretty decent read, took me about a couple of hours to finish. For a 100 page story, the plot was able to develop well and wrap up in a satisfying finale that opened up into more possibilities for the story. I for one think this is thanks to the strong writing and language skills of the author. All characters had a detailed depth to them, and each could stand on their own which I liked. The mystical side of the story definitely took as a strong focus, but was skillfully structured in a way it did not overtake the entire world, allowing it to keep that detective, modern fantasy plot. One thing I would have liked would be to see some of the side characters towards the end and have that closure. Either way it was an intriguing read, even for me and I tend to struggle committing to stories less in action. I received and reviewed an early review copy of the title. From LibraryThing Questa recensione è stata scritta per Recensori in anteprima di LibraryThing. This provided a quick but enjoyable read. A senator's child goes missing in Alaska. Based on witness accounts they deduce that it's some sort of cryptic monster and call in the CIA who conveniently has a department for these matters. Then main character is a female who happens to have one of the few weapons for killing these types of monsters. She is also an expert on North American species. She and her partner are assigned the case. But oh no... she has a phobia of water and this monster is sorta an inuit siren soooo that's awkward. And thats the set up. It was a fairly one dimensional story. But I was happy to read it and finished quickly. I'd consider other books in the series for those looking for some light entertainment in book form. Unlike other early review copies I've received - I did not find any editing errors. I received and reviewed an early review copy of this title. Cryptids are mythical creatures, think Bigfoot or Nessie, or real ones that are simply unknown to science. In this series, they exist. Some are evil, some more ambivalent, but mostly they're just going about doing what comes natural to their species. What we may see as evil could be nothing more than a creature defending its territory or simply popping out for a bite to eat.
As a paranormal thriller, this book gets the job done. A great addition to a good series. ( )
