I am a HUGE fan of the old Gothic romance/mystery genre. Especially those written in the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Dorothy Eden was one of the most recognized names in the genre. I have a nice collection of these books and so I have several written by Dorothy Eden. I like to work these old books into my reading schedule from time to time.
An Afternoon Walk was published in 1971. The premise may have worked well during that era, but for today's modern woman, it just wouldn't fly.
Ella, a married woman with a school aged daughter, that recently suffered a miscarriage, happens upon on old run down house while out on a walk with her daughter. After this discovery, things start to go very wrong for Ella. Her husband begins a campaign of mental abuse against her, she has frightening phone calls and begins to question her sanity.
At the same time a woman that is kidnapped becomes front page news and Ella begins to think the woman's kidnapping may be related to her own troubles somehow.
Ella's husband, Max is just an outright jerk. I don't think women today would have put up with him too long. But, the mystery about the phone calls, and how all that tied in with the kidnapping and the old house kept me turning the pages.
Some folks have tagged this book as YA, but I don't really think this book fits into that category. It is adult fiction.
The suspense and mystery is good but the motives behind Max's actions were implausible I thought. This wasn't Dorothy Eden's best effort. Still, considering the time it was published in, not bad. Overall a C- ( )
