As each holiday season approaches, some revel in welcoming the New Year ahead; others quietly mourn the passing of time gone by. "We can't hold on to the past," says Master Quilter Sylvia Compson, "but we can keep the best part of 'Auld Lang Syne' in our hearts and in our memories, and we can look forward to the future with hope and resolve." As Sylvia, a late-in-life newlywed, has discovered, love can enter our lives at any age. Yet before she can truly delight in her present happiness, she must face the sorrow hidden in her past - her own role in the tragic circumstances that left her estranged from her sister, Claudia, until it was too late to make amends. Vowing not to repeat the mistake with her new daughter-in-law, Amy, who opposed Sylvia's marriage to her father, Andrew, Sylvia must convince Amy that family is more precious than pride. As Sylvia takes up a quilt for the season, begun and abandoned over six years, she recalls the New Year's Eve festivities of her youth at Elm Creek Manor as a member of the Bergstrom family. She titles the quilt "New Year's Reflections," after her belief that year-end reflections precede resolutions. The quilt blocks she chooses commemorate the wisdom that no one can ever be truly alone if she keeps the memory of those she loved and those who loved her alive in her heart. The New Year's Quilt is a novel to enjoy today and to treasure anew each holiday season.… (altro)

It had been a few years since I had read this series. This one was a bit slow at the start but definitely picked up at the end. ( )

The New Year's Quilt (Elm Creek Quilts, #11) by Jennifer Chiaverini
In this book, good as a a stand alone the story follows Sylvia and her life as a child and then onward through the years.
The ones that touched me the most where the depression years when they had lost their mother but the farm was doing ok because of the thoroughbred horses they raised.
Others came by to work with hopes of getting fed and a place to sleep. Love that she took it upon herself after her father dropped the boys off at the orphanage she and others made quilts for them to make them feel safe and loved.
Times are even worse over the years as she loses so many. Hard times also when her husbands' child must learn to accept their marriage.
Loved hearing all about the quilting and can picture the squares being discussed in my mind.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device). ( )

After Sylvia Bergstrom Compson and Andrew Cooper's impromptu Christmas wedding, they must break the news to Andrew's daughter, Amy, who was opposed to their engagement. How will she take the news? As Sylvia and Andrew honeymoon in New York, Sylvia remembers long-ago New Year's, the resolutions she made, and the lessons she learned. She particularly remembers the rift with her sister, Claudia, and resolves not to make the same mistake with Amy.

While I liked reading about the New Year's traditions in various countries, I felt like a lot of the book repeated content from earlier books in the series. It didn't serve to advance the series in any way. I think readers could safely skip this one without missing anything important to the overall series story line. ( )

This is my first time listening to Ms. Chiaverini's books on CD and it went quickly. Since I have pretty much have read her books non-stop a bit of it was repetitive, but it would be nice place to pick up, if you took a break prior to this one. Sylvia reflects back on many times in her life around New Year's starting when her cousin Elizabeth is about to leave for California. Her "present time" is right after her wedding to Andrew and she's facing telling his daughter Amy of their surprise nuptials at Christmas. She completes a quilt with blocks representing resolutions in her life. ( )
