( ) Man, this thing was like a view over the horizon when I got a copy (third edition) in 1993. Its list of public-accessible FTP sites and telnet servers was likea starving man reading the menu from a four-star restaurant. I used a Vax acount at Boston College to visit as many of these things as I could, regardless of what they offfered. The Drosophilia database? Sure! Cool! The Youngstown (OH) Freenet via telnet? Great, I spent lots of time there. "Zen and the Art of the Internet" in PostScript? Great, I can print it out...Wait, why is that angry man emerging from the print room with 700 sheets of paper? Hah! It's a book for university, community college, and high school students and teachers. This revision of the second edition of The Whole Internet is designed for those who want to use the network particularly for research applications. It is not intended in any way as an engineer's guide to internetworking, and you do not need to learn UNIX to use it. Some references to UNIX remain, but those that do are there only for the benefit of those who already know a little bit about UNIX or might choose to learn more. The classroom instructor can certainly help steer his/her students clear of any sections that still sneak into the UNIX world. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
