I have wanted to read this author for years and I was thrilled with Carmen's wacky story! ( ) January 12, 2009 review: This was such fun! If you're a superhero fan, you'll love this tongue-in-cheek homage/satire of the superhero genre. You have your girl reporter (Carmen) who has made it her life's work to unmask the superheroes and ubervillians that inhabit the world after discovering her fiance in bed with her best friend on her wedding day... and that they were hero and nemesis. I laughed my way through the story and will definitely be picking up the next one. 11/29/11: I re-read this again after reading A Karma Girl Christmas and remembering how much I loved this series. There is something wonderful about re-reading a book you loved the first time around, a few years later. The plot points have gotten fuzzy so it's almost like reading it for the first time, with the added deliciousness of nostalgia. Love this. 1/23/14: I've been recommending this series like whoa to people. A friend mentioned she had been reading them based on my recommendation, and I got the hankering to revisit Bigtime. As always, I fell headfirst into the campy, fun, and totally tongue-in-cheek world Estep created. I had read some of her Elemental Assassin books, and had been less than impressed. So I am a bit baffled after re-reading this book that the flaws in the Elemental Assassin series aren't really present here. There was no annoying repetition, and very little info dumps. If I hadn't known better I would have said the Spider books were her earlier books. The author uses superhero/comic cliches as deliberate and effective narrative shortcuts. You know alliterative names mean something, you know if it glows it can do things that only happen in comics, and so on. Beyond that there was enough complexity and good characters that it was fun, entertaining. I wanted to give it four stars because all told, it's a fun take on such worlds. The descriptions around her transformation were Great! Alas for me, the story fell short in the one place a romance can't - I was only told about their attraction, I didn't feel it much. And, worse, the main character does a stupid thing regarding her love interest More Than Once. This is the first in a series, and I hope the author did better in subsequent books. But in this one, an editor should have demanded more. More feeling, more intelligence. Sigh.
Reviewed by Jen Book provided by the publisher for review Review originally posted at Romancing the Book Back in November, Jennifer Estep visited the blog (click here to go to the post) to tell us about the last book in her Bigtime series. After that visit, I decided to get a copy of the first book, Karma Girl. Since Jennifer will be back with us this coming week to talk about Spider’s Bite, the first book in her new series, I thought I’d read and review Karma Girl for you. Carmen Cole is getting married. Yet on her wedding day, she feels something is terribly wrong, so she goes to talk to her husband-to-be. But she’s in for the shock of her life when she not only discovers her best friend and fiancee’ in flagrante delicto, but also that he is a superhero and she is his arch nemesis. Carmen uses her career as a reporter to unmask the two and begins a crusade to expose the identities of other caped crusaders and their arch enemies. Her exposes earn her a job at one of the largest newspapers and her assignment is to discover the identities of the Fearless Five and Terrible Triad. But when she reports on the identity of one of the town’s most beloved superheros, her world comes crashing down around her… I was hooked on the story from the first pages. I loved the concept that Jennifer created; it was my first superhero romance (yes, there is romance). And I’m eagerly anticipating getting my hands on copies of Hot Mama and Jinx. In fact, I enjoyed this story so much, I recommended it to my sister when I was only halfway through it. I’ll admit that I figured out the secret identities of all the characters that were revealed before Carmen. But it didn’t diminish my fascination of where the story was going. There are a few twists and turns along the road and more laugh out loud moments than I could count. Karma Girl is a page turner from beginning to end. Appartiene alle SerieBigtime (1) È contenuto in
