Books in Tanya Lloyd Kyi's America Series focus on individual states, cities, and regions throughout the US, and include at least 37 volumes to date; a parallel series by the same author deals with Canada. If the book Georgia is typical, they represent some excellent series. The photographs are superb in color, resolution, and choice of subject.

To non-residents, the name "Georgia" may bring to mind historic Savannah, the metropolis of Atlanta, and beyond that, perhaps the Okefenokee Swamp. The photographs included herein document not just these locales, but mountains, forests, gorges, waterfalls, and canyons; nature scenes and landscapes; protected areas such as the Cumberland National Seashore, where the loggerhead turtles lay their eggs; and scenes from some of the major cities (Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah, and Athens). Also included are historic sites dating to the Revolutionary War and Civil War, as well as the ML King National Historic Site, and the location of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Little White House" near the hot springs where he sought respite from his polio. I was disappointed not to find any photos taken from within the 430,000 acre Okefenokee Swamp (the sole related photo shows an unidentified building!). Likewise, the only photo of the Stone Mountain sculpture (a manificent work of art said to be larger than a football field) gives no sense of its scale or scope, but shows only a closeup of the head and torso of one of the figures.

Such quibbles aside, the book documents with fine photos and informative captions the rich landscape and great attractions of the state of Georgia, and offers a useful and enjoyable alternative to an actual visit. ( )
