I read INTO THE WOODS a while back and wondered, "Who would envy Alexander Supertramp?" Brendan Wolf is that guy. He's full of hope but constantly making bad choices, just like his hero. This was a very compelling read. I stayed up too late to find out what would happen next. ( )
Brendan, der eigentlich Victor heißt, kriegt sein Leben nicht in den Griff; er kann sich nicht aufraffen, selbst Verantwortung zu übernehmen und gleitet so von einem Job in den nächsten, schlittert von einer Katastrophe zur anderen, ohne in der Lage zu sein, Herr seiner eigenen Geschicke zu werden. Um seinem Leben Halt zu geben, will dieses ehemalige Pflegekind seine Familie zurückfinden. Seinen Bruder spürt er im Gefängnis auf, und der überredet ihn auch gleich zu neuen Katastrophen: Teilnahme an einem Diebstahl und Wohnen bei einem alten Schwulen, dessen Lover im Knast sitzt. Beides erweist sich letztendlich als Tragödie - völlig erwartet - und auch das einzige Ereignis, das Brendan selbst in die Wege leitet - den auf der Suche nach Liebe seienden Sean anzusprechen - entgleitet ihm, weil er nicht im Stande ist, zwischen dem Richtigen und dem vermeintlichen Richtigen zu entscheiden. Die Familie, die eigentlich der Rettungsanker sein sollte, entpuppt sich als böse Verführung. Brendan hat allerdings auch am Ende nichts gelernt und sucht am Schluss gleich wieder nach einer neuen Phantasiegestalt, die sein Leben führen kann. 300 Seiten und von Charakterentwicklung keine Spur; schade eigentlich, denn Brian Malloy ist ein wunderbarer Sprachkünstler. Hoffentlich ist sein nächstes Thema gelungener! ( )
