Perry does an excellent job of continuing the multi-layer story of DS9. The religious crisis of the book of secular prophecies allowed for the book to delve into a deeper story of the meaning of religious faith then would have been possible on the show and its here where the arena of the written word proves its a better home for the character of DS9 then in episodic television. Although initially seeming very fanwankish, the pairing of ST's two top Bajoran females is perfect, paying off very well at the bittersweet ending of the novel. Still think the inclusion of the Enterprise is a bit much. Looking forward to reading more. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

In general I'd say that if we'd (DS9 fans) gotten books 1-2 as a multi-episode arc in a season 8 of the show, I think we'd be largely satisfied. There's a lot of fan service and the characters for the most part feel like they were handled by the writers room of the show. We get a couple new characters who seem like they'd fit into the show pretty well and while putting Ro in charge of security doesn't make a ton of logical sense, neither did Ben falling in love with a Maquis sympathizer (Kasidy) during the show's run.
However, it does feel like way too many ideas were set in motion in the first book with no clear plan on how to resolve them in the end. Jake seems to be the whole lynchpin of the story in the beginning, and then book 2 ends with ambiguity on his part. Is this to set up more books? Did we ever get those books? I don't know I'll have to investigate. There's the jemhadar sent by Odo, but then wait he's actually lying, but then wait there's actually ANOTHER jemhadar who was actually sent by Odo. It just felt like the writer wasn't sure which idea to commit to and tried to resolve them both, which feels disingenuous to the fans. I don't know maybe that's just me. Like I said if this had been across multiple episodes of the show I might've accepted it for some reason. Overall good books for fans who want more closure after season 7, but it's an open ended closure for sure- ( )
