Searching for a way to prevent another galactic holocaust, Colonel Kira is forced to make a choice between being true to her faith and being true to her loyalties. Meanwhile, as the combined crews of Deep Space Nine and the USS Enterprise struggle to stop a treacherous plot from destroying both the station and the ship, the shocking truth behind a disturbing prophecy and a grisly murder is revealed. Spoilers ahead:

In general I'd say that if we'd (DS9 fans) gotten books 1-2 as a multi-episode arc in a season 8 of the show, I think we'd be largely satisfied. There's a lot of fan service and the characters for the most part feel like they were handled by the writers room of the show. We get a couple new characters who seem like they'd fit into the show pretty well and while putting Ro in charge of security doesn't make a ton of logical sense, neither did Ben falling in love with a Maquis sympathizer (Kasidy) during the show's run.
However, it does feel like way too many ideas were set in motion in the first book with no clear plan on how to resolve them in the end. Jake seems to be the whole lynchpin of the story in the beginning, and then book 2 ends with ambiguity on his part. Is this to set up more books? Did we ever get those books? I don't know I'll have to investigate. There's the jemhadar sent by Odo, but then wait he's actually lying, but then wait there's actually ANOTHER jemhadar who was actually sent by Odo. It just felt like the writer wasn't sure which idea to commit to and tried to resolve them both, which feels disingenuous to the fans. I don't know maybe that's just me. Like I said if this had been across multiple episodes of the show I might've accepted it for some reason. Overall good books for fans who want more closure after season 7, but it's an open ended closure for sure- ( )

S.D. Perry does an excellent job of continuing the multi-layer story of DS9. The religious crisis of the book of secular prophecies allowed for the book to delve into a deeper story of the meaning of religious faith then would have been possible on the show and its here where the arena of the written word proves its a better home for the character of DS9 then in episodic television. Although initially seeming very fanwankish, the pairing of ST's two top Bajoran females is perfect, paying off very well at the bittersweet ending of the novel. Still think the inclusion of the Enterprise is a bit much. Looking forward to reading more. ( )

Die Auflösung kommt schnell und etwas unbefriedigend, ansonsten ist es ein starkes Werk. ( )

Enjoyed the overall story but didn't like the second book as much as the first. The plot that I was expecting to become a major story ended up being only a minor reference, likely leading to the next books in the series. ( )

For Steve, Dianne, and Gwen
For home

Same as the last book, so if you read it there, you can skip this part:

This book wouldn't have been possible without the kindness, creative improvements, and/or information provided to me by...

Paula Block, at Paramount, for her tremendous support.  Keith R.A. DeCandido and David Henderson, who helped compile the time line.  Doctor Joelle Murray, for a few physics definitions that I think I understand (Joelle: you rock).  Cliff Nielsen for his brilliant cover art, and Mike Okuda, for the new logo design (sharp, eh?).  Jessica McGivney, for always believing.  Also Rob Simpson, who was there at the story's conception...and of course, my editor, Marco Palmieri, who is a creative force behind these books but tries to avoid taking credit.

On a more personal note, I need to thank Steve and Dianne Perry, Doctor Les Goldmann, and Myk Olsen, for their moral support...and to every brave writer of Star Trek technical journals, encyclopedias, chronologies, and companions - without you, I'd still be writing the outline.

Odo sat on the speck of rock in the great golden sea, on the barren island where he had last seen her face, watching the ocean glimmer and wave.
