I love her books. ( )

Good enough beach book with an interesting (but ultimately absurd) plot. But it was yet another book with largely unlikeable characters. Sometimes I understand why they need to be unlikeable but in this particular book it did not seem necessary.

Three women: Vicki with lung cancer, husband Ted, and 2 boys; Brenda, her sister and a disgraced professor who had a relationship with her student, Walsh, a 31-year old Australian; and Melanie, Vicki's best friend, pregnant and cheated on by her husband Peter; all arrive on Nantucket for the summer. They live in their aunt's cottage, which Vicki and Brenda inherited. The cancer treatment causes Vicki many issues while Brenda tries to take care of her sister and write a screenplay in order to pay off a debt related to her time at Champion University as a professor. Melanie is dealing with her husbands infidelity and her surprise pregnancy. Enter Josh, a 21 or 22 year-old college student, who sees them as they disembarked the plane. He is hired as a babysitter for the two boys each weekday morning. This job pays much better than his job at the airport. He is dealing with a needy ex-girlfriend, Didi. ( )
