I didn't expect the beginning, I think is quite novel, but the rhythm is different in the middle part, I suppose due to the presentation of the characters. These 'gods' are both curious and weird. ( )

Senn has been abandoned by the god who once gave him powers. And so our story begins as he travels the desolate world. I really liked that he wasn't a good person. In fact, all the characters were rather flawed - which I appreciated. I do wish, however, that they had more distinct voices. I did love the art at the start though and wish it had continued throughout the book (even if the same images were being used).

The author definitely had some unique ideas, but I feel like not that much happened in this book. I did find the ending somewhat unexpected though. Not a very common ending especially since this is only the first book . It is a rather open ended cliffhangerish thing though so I'm sure the author has some interesting ideas as to what will happen next. That being said, this is the first book in a series and I'm sure they have ideas that they want to build off this strong foundation. Definitely a good introduction to the world! ( )

Mars G. Everson has a lot to offer the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Thralls of a Tyrant God: A Dark Fantasy Epic (The God Engine Book 1) has enough unique elements to make it a sought-after read. A drawback of self-publishing is the lack of an editor to help develop where development is needed and to help push writing through slow parts that don't advance the story, but feel like spinning wheels. Thralls had a little bit of both. Thralls of a Tyrant God also had some incredibly well crafted sentences, and I was surprised to find out English is not the author's first language. Both the plot and character development were well done and have me looking forward to Book 2 in the series. Everson's engaging style of writing has me invested and wanting to follow the story as it unfolds.

I was sent a review copy by the author through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program.

It's easy to feel like everything that can be done in fantasy has already been done to death, so it's refreshing to come across something unlike anything you've ever read before. Thralls of a Tyrant God has many familiar narrative beats, but it uses them to tell a story we don't often get to read.

While I wish the beginning felt a little less aimless and the magic system was a little more fleshed out, once the storylines started converging and the pace picked up, I couldn't put the book down.

Mars Everson is great at creating a world you want to see saved and the idea of collective action rather than seeing one hero doing it all was extremely refreshing. ( )
