The entire story was interesting, filled with intrigue, suspense, and innocent love. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a feel-good story without the smut. This was a riveting, action-packed read with likeable characters, and an engaging storyline that alluded to a compelling backstory for the main characters. This novel was more unique in that you could get inside the mind of a narcissist, observing how they justified their behaviour. While the Christian worldview was refreshing, it was jarring to see psychics and Stoicism coming across as being endorsed. Being Asian, I also had difficulty believing the Asian characters would completely personify their culture to the extent that they did, especially living in America. However, I fully appreciated their representation as being normative, and believe that the presence of multicultural characters added to the story. All in all, the message around toxic family members and protecting one's own mental health was well portrayed against a backdrop of suspenseful legal drama, which was enjoyable to read. East of Evil is full of twists and turns, it provides an unexpected climax. What’s this story about? Greed, dysfunctional families, hate, anger, hope, joy, and revenge among others. It’s wholly captivating! Most of the characters are likable, but you also get a fascinating villain! Grab a copy for a good read!
Fisher uses her exemplary writing skills to weave colorful layers within an intriguing storyline. Vivid descriptions of the scenery bring the settings to life. Her attention to detail pulls the reader into the plot as it winds through the timeline. The characters are rich and dynamic, and their development through the narrative elicits visceral reactions from the reader. Joni M. Fisher has crafted a masterful work of mystery, suspense, and fantastic sleuthing in this gripping conclusion to her stellar series. I enjoyed Nefi as a protagonist, and I found it easy to pick up her story and follow the thread of her triumphs, struggles, and past grief without reading everything else in the previous books. The plot itself is a great standalone mystery, and this is intensified all the more by Nefi’s emotional journey and her true passion for justice. I adored the build-up of suspense as the mystery pieces came together, but it never felt spoon-fed, and there were still plenty of surprises along the way. Overall, East of Evil is a novel that will satisfy fans of the existing series immensely, and I’d highly recommend the series in general to crime and mystery fans seeking an accomplished new author to enjoy. The beginning of the story sucked me right in. I was eager to see what happened next, and by the end, I wondered how things would resolve. I did not see the ending coming. East of Evil focuses on Nefi Jenkins, a want to be FBI agent who was raised in a small village deep in the Amazon rainforest by her hippy parents until their untimely death.
About to graduate, and waiting to begin an FBI internship, Nefi’s world is turned on it’s head when she discovers that her parents set up a trust fund for her with a life changing amount of money.
The trust fund also brings danger as Nefi discovers that some of the money has disappeared and she needs answers from the former trustee.
Whilst each book in the series says it can be read as a stand-alone story, I would recommend reading them in order as some of the plots take place over similar time periods and are referenced here. If you haven’t read the previous titles then this can cause the reader to feel that certain parts of the story were somewhat glossed over.
I found the balance between character and relationship development slightly heavy compared to the plot and story and at times the legal detail was unnecessarily complex in relation to the rest of the story.
The plot twists came as no real surprise but fitted well with the story and my expected outcomes.
I enjoyed the overall story and the central characters are clearly defined making it easy to remember who is who. The main villain could have been better utilised but serves their purpose to keep the plot moving on.
In summary, this is an entertaining read but to get the best out of it then I’d recommend reading the four books in order to allow the characters and semi intertwining plots to develop.
I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys character driven light thrillers as long as you’re not expecting a complex action packed plot. ( )
