So slow this book was. I only liked one character. Memento mori is everywhere. I wish it read in chronological order.
But I did like the cover of this book. The cover really grabbed my attention. Made me Curious about the novel and wanted to read it. ( )

Unfortunately I did not read the first two books in the series so I felt lost for almost the whole novel. I feel like I was missing a lot of back story so I do not recommend reading this book without reading the others. I do think there are too many characters though and it’s hard to keep track of them all. There are some minor characters mentioned that adds to the confusion that should be left out completely (in example a Davide). The author would be smart to include a beginning chapter on definitions and characters alone which might help someone who hasn’t read her other novels catch up.

Overall, I enjoyed how the author writes. She paints a pretty picture by using such detail in her words. It was easier to envision the scenes this way. I did lot find it necessary for her to repeat phrases over and over again and that could definitely shorten the book some. ( )

I just can't get into this book. The characters just come across as very flat and things are told rather then shown.
Many of the words used make very little sense to me. Don't read unless you have read the first two in the series.

Higgs's wording is the most picturesque I have ever read in my decades on this rock. She could describe a glass of water in a way that would make a drowning person want it. Reading this book is a decadent pleasure. However, I regret reading this volume in the Whiteland series first. You absolutely must read the other books first to know what in the hell is going on. ( )
