Yong Ling Kang's gentle illustrations, executed in primarily pink, aqua, yellow and green watercolors, accompany Jennifer Mook-Sang's simple how-to "guide" for introducing a (recently widowed?) grandparent into an extended family's home. As the child-narrator helps to settle her grandmother into her new room (and life with the family), Kang and Mook-Sang harmoniously mirror the young child's "keeping" of her grandmother with the grandmother's care of her plants-- the one she brought and the many more she nurtures to life as she herself begins to grow in her own new space. For the most part, these subtle comparisons are consistently carried throughout the text, with the exception of one oddly written spread: "My grandma was discombobulated by changes to her routine. But I was patient./Eventually, we found plans that worked for everyone." This passage feels "off" from the rest of the text. Likewise, the final page seems to stop abruptly. Still, it was a breath of fresh air to read this sweet picture book, which is filled with hope (even in the event of grandma's sometimes being "a little wilted"). The narrator is always patient, always smiling. Grandma is equally gentle and kind. I am honored to review my copy as an early reviewer for LT and am pleased to add it to our library for future lending purposes. ( )

Do you sometimes have a grandma that you see that comes and stays with you and your family? You want to help her out by doing things or at least trying. Well, this book, The Care and Keeping of Grandmas is a sweet story about a granddaughter and her grandma when her grandma came to live with her and the family.

Though she is this in the prefer of her view and learning along the way. These are her tips throughout the book to help others and children. The pictures and story are done well.

I like the story; each person can change the person for themselves, even though this one is about a granddaughter and her grandma. You can picture a grandson helping out his grandma. Though this book. It shows that you need to allow time and let the person suggest, and they will ask for help rather than have it forced upon them.

Grandmas are something special to have, and I enjoy the grandma I have left. However, I loved both of my grandmas when I had them. This book shows that grandmas can do things, and some live in different places; we should still be around to help when needed.

This story shows the special bond a grandchild has with their grandma. However, the child learns when to lend a hand and when to let her do her own thing. But be there when you need to be there. This story shows the love and care bond between a grandchild and a grandmother. Suppose the grandma needs to move in and feel at home. This book tells that in a funny and fun way, a picture book. Have you heard of " How to Babysit a Grandma"? This book puts a little humor and a fun spin on it.

This is a story about a little girl who helps her grandmother when she moves in. This is a lovely book for children if there is an elderly relative who is coming to stay with them. It has cheerful illustrations and is a great story to help prep children about making everyone comfortable in the new routine. ( )

Review of The Care and Keeping of Grandmas by Jennifer Mook Sang,
Illustrated by Yong Ling Kang.

Received through Library Thing for an honest review. ;
When grandma moves in, her granddaughter decides that she will try to make grandma comfortable in her new environment. The colorful illustrations show the many ways the granddaughter helped grandma from helping set up and decorate her new room to feeding her and introducing her to the neighbors. And by being patient with grandma as she got used to her new home.

This is a great book for children welcoming an older relative into the home. By helping grandma the child also becomes more comfortable with the new living situation as everyone settles into a new routine. I like the fact that the book’s focus is on the granddaughter’s active roll in helping grandma become comfortable in her new surroundings.

Cute concept, about a little girl's observations when her grandmother comes to live with her family. I think it would be better as a book to be read to children, as some of the text has very advanced vocabulary words, such as "discombobulated". The pictures are bright and cheery, and convey emotions very well. Off to the granddaughters! ( )
