The setting of the book is revealed to the reader early in the book on the front inside cover. The picture depicts the trails and creeks that miners used during the Gold Rush era in California. The setting is also mentioned on the beginning page; on this page, the book depicted the houses the miners lived in and mentioned that he and his father are in Crystal Creek mining for Gold. The plot is affected by the setting because this is where the a lot of mining happened. The plot couldn't be in Louisiana because mining was not a thing in that area, so it would not make sense this is why the setting has to match greatly with the plot. The plot is not that exciting; it sort of just tells a story about a young boy who was born into a mining family with his father. He gets a pet pig and grows some corn for pig food. Eventually, he finds a goat who was eating his corn and takes it in as a pet. He then had goat milk and corn, so the people wanted to trade for these items. He eventually made a food restaurant and store for the people. The setting matters in this part of the story also because they are in a mining community doing something so different than the others, but it is successful because they were the only place like that in the area they were in. Jake, the little boy in the book wants a dog. He hopes that he has enough gold to buy one. Once at the market, the store owner does not have a dog to sell him, but instead, a pig. Jake bought the pig because it had similar characteristics of a dog ( floppy ears, 4 legs, and a tail). He names the pig “ Dog” and from there they run into luck. From planting corn, to finding a goat all of these little things are such luxuries to them that they trade with other people. They share their luck with other people. ( )

Jake and his dad went to the west to stike gold and become rich. When that doesnt happen, Jake begins planting corn and trading goods. His dad sees these as lucky but Jake knows the value of planning. Jake reminds me of myself because he likes to have a plan and a backup plan just in case that plan fails. The west was a place of exciting new adventures and Jake and his dad were ready for whatever came their way. ( )

Jake is a boy who has had lots of luck some his way once he caught a pig that he names dog. Jake and his dad lived along a creek, an they would pan for gold. One day, they got a large gold nugget and they went to the town to buy all the tings they needed. Jake has always wanted a dog, but the shop owner only had a pig. The pig had many similarities to a dog, so Jake named him Dog. Dog brought Jake and his dad lots of good luck, an they thrived without having to go gold mining again that season. The book never says the time period the story is taking place, but based off of them mining for gold at the beginning of the book it is safe to say that the story takes place during the mid 1800's when the gold rush was the most prominent. Many people went to California during that time to look for gold, so we can also infer that they are living somewhere in California. Jake's only goal in the book is to get a dog, and once he gets his pig Jake has reached his goal. The rest of the plot of the book is about how Dog brings Jake and his dad good luck, and all of the good fortune they receive that year. ( )

The book "Lucky Jake" is about a little boy and his father gold mining during the California Gold Rush. Jake's father finds a lump of gold and the story goes from there and they get luckier and luckier. They end up aquiring a pet pig, finding seed corn to plant corn with, acquiring a goat, having supplies to make food with it, and they eventually open a restaurant called "Jake's" with their luck. They go from finding one lump of gold to owning a restaurant in the book and it teaches children that they shouldn't give up and should always keep moving forward to accomplish new goals. Also, in this historical fiction book, it brings the reader back to this time by depicting the clothing and setting as a part of this time period. ( )
