Francesca Cahill Deadly series traces a turn of the century (1900's) New York city socialite
as she operates as "crime solver extraordinaire"

I wouldn't call her mystery a cozy but it has (in the 2 I've read) a certain innocence that was refreshing.

Slowly, I'll work through more of the series. ( )

This book doesn't exactly read like your average historical romance. First, the setting is a little different; while most historical romances take place in regency or Victorian England, this one is set in turn-of-the-century New York City. While the time frame might make it easier for the author to portray the characters and lifestyle of the time (early 20th century New Yorkers had a few of our modern commodities, like electricity, telephones and even typewriters), it is also hard to capture the essence of the society of that period without falling into some mistakes; it would be easy to make the characters act very much like modern-day people. The author does make this mistake sometimes, especially with the main characters (Francesca is way too friendly with Rick and they are nearly strangers), but overall, she is quite adept at describing the period with some degree of accuracy (though you must take into account that this is a work of fiction).

Second, this book is not only about the main characters feelings towards each other; one might even say that part is quite secondary... which is a shame, as the main storyline, the abduction of the son of a wealthy man is not very well developed. So, in the end, you have a below average mystery/suspense plot mixed with an underdeveloped love story. Of course, one must take into consideration that this is just the first in a series of books; the relationship of the characters will certainly develop in later books.

That said, I must admit I liked this book. I liked it for its simplicity and entertainment value. It's not exactly a masterpiece of mystery or romance but it does its job. The writing is engaging, if a bit weird at times, so I'd say this is a good read if one wants to just have a good time.

First in the series. I love seeing a continuation to the Bragg family. Francesca makes a fascinating character. This is clearly romantic suspense at the dawn of the 20th century. ( )

I adore this series and cannot say enough good things about it. Perfect blend of historical mystery and romance set in New York City. ( )

Welcome to the world of Francesca Cahill, crime-solver extraordinaire. Francesca is no ordinary heroine. She refuses to bow to convention, wears her heart on her sleeve, and is determined to right the ills and injustices of society.
