Cozy is a large male musk. His coat is thick and beautiful. He is in love with Lofti, who has rejected his advances. Learning of a more serious situation, that of his good friend Bella who is a beluga whale who long overdue played in an inlet. Staying past the time when she should have left, equates to ice forming and blocking the way out.

Cozy rushes to the aid of his friend who is bound to save her. His idea is to push heavy boulders that will take up room and perhaps cause the water to rise to a new level, thereby creating an escape for his friend.

Fortunately, Cozy has large horns and enough mass in his body to push very strongly. Pushing more than one boulder creates a successful way of escape for Lofti.

Tired with sore muscles and a head ache, soon he feels silky-soft musk, Lofti. Both were in love.

Jan Brett's illustrations and elaborate borders again intentionally help tell this tale as much as her words. Cozy feels bummed out that he is not winning the official completion for his crush, Lofti. But when he bravely helps a beluga out of a jam, he realizes that official competitions are not the ones that matter, after Lofti witnesses him use his physical strength and strength of character to help a friend.
