Some people enjoy reading for its own sake and like detailed descriptions and subplots and characterizations and atmosphere. They will not like this book.

Some people like an action-adventure story that wastes no words on details. They probably don't read book blogs, but they will like this book.

So, should this book be a movie? It could be. The terseness of descriptions leaves lots of room for creative movie-makers to include different actors.

What I think some other reviewers really didn't like is that this book is obviously Part 1 of what feels like a trilogy. The guys have an adequate number of adventures, with a tragic loss and a romance, in the course of their quest--to identify and find the scientist who may be able to help them resolve the situation they want to change. That's where this volume cuts off. Part 2 is already available but, because Part 1 is in the near future and Part 2 involves technology that's hard to accept as near future, some people might reject the whole story.

This is unfortunate because there's a lot to like about this story. As a typical literary-type reader I might prefer a more literary narrative style, but Chadwick's writing is lean, clean prose that moves briskly and is easy to read. I appreciate the Christian background of a story with no need for preaching, the way ethnic diversity is taken for granted as neighbors bond, the rejection of Marxist theory and focus on a logical view of reality in the search for solutions to social problems. I like the storyline enough to suspend disbelief in time travel. Apparently some people don't.

Political bias also needs to be taken into account. Advocates of global government are not sympathetically portrayed in this book, and can be counted on to hate it and probably call for censorship if the book starts to sell. Political bias should not affect our judgment of the merit of a novel, though I suppose it will always affect our ability to enjoy reading one. ( )

I didn't realize how dreary this was going to get. I only read up to 30% of the book. I stopped at that point due to not enjoying the story.

Reece Daniels is the protagonist when a global Covid pandemic has killed his mother. He has holed away in a remote cabin to wait out whatever comes along. An ex-girlfriend phones him asking for rescue in Chicago which is five hours away. The usual dystopian trope ensues with thugs coalescing into armed marauders preying on a group of citizens who have banded together for mutual sustainability and protection. There are morals to be learned from this story; how one person, no matter how small, can make a difference in the lives of a community but you have to wade through far too much religiosity, and a muck of World Economic Forum-Covid 19 conspiracy theories to get there. I just about packed it in a few times but soldiered on because the ebook was won on a Librarything contest which I did choose to enter. I will not be reading any further books in the series. ( )

I won this book through Librarything and discovered it started as a serial story on Amazon Vella. That's like an old radio show where you tuned in on a regular basis to hear what happens next. The book has over 50 short chapters so you know there's always something happening. It's about living in our post pandemic world if so many people had died that not only was there a supply chain disruption but slso a breakdown in the electrical, fuel and communications systems. Most people are just not prepared for problems on that scale. It's a good read and while I was worried that it would leave me with a cliff hanger, it stopped in a logical place where a new book would be a whole different story. ( )

This was an interesting take on the Covid pandemic in America. I did enjoy the internal struggle Reece faced. Defiantly delt with loss in the wake of the pandemic. The last half of the story gets very religious, but to me that added to Reece's decision to try and make a difference. This was a quick read, lots of explaining rather than showing writing style. The story ends, just kinda ends ... (I see it does say book one) ( )
